JOB SUMMARY:
 
Able to set-up, operate, and make minor adjustments to CNC milling machines as required to produce quality level injection molds and related tools/parts.  Must be to load CNC programs in order and be able to follow CNC Programmer instructions such as set-up sheets, tool lists, work instructions, etc. to machine quality molds & components as required.  Must be able to identify, select, inspect, and measure cutting tools to achieve desired part dimensions and surface quality.  Must understand and demonstrate the ability to calculate fixture (work) offsets and tool length offsets, as well as utilize basic computer skills in order to communicate with the CNC control and perform daily functions.  Must be able to implement basic math skills, thoroughly understand the 3D Cartesian coordinate system and perform daily record keeping tasks as required. Must also be able to safely utilize conventional equipment such as band saws, knee-mills, lathes, surface grinders, etc. to produce components, jigs, and fixtures as required. 
 
Additional toolmaker responsibilities will include properly fitting bushings, ejector pins, date-wheels, and other components in mold tool assemblies. Ability to calculate ejector pin length requirements from mold stack-up measurements and grind to fit as required.  Ability to properly assemble MUD units and similar molds with moving parts and ejector systems that function properly.  Recognize different types of mold textures and understand when it is possible to make minor repairs in-house or when the mold should be re-textured.  Ability to polish and remove small imperfections in mold surfaces that would affect the injection part quality. 
 
Must be able to inspect finished machined parts per drawings/prints and instructions.   Must be very familiar with the use of standard machining gages, i.e. micrometers, calipers, bore mics, depth mics, height gages, plug gages, etc.  Must be proficient using both inch and metric measurement systems, as well as possess a high level of ability in reading and interpreting part prints with a thorough understanding of unilateral and bilateral tolerances. 
 
Other required tasks will include supporting the Injection Mold Department by performing routine maintenance on injection tools as identified by the production department.  This will include washing, cleaning, tape removal, sandblasting, and necessary repair issues.  Additionally the CNC Operator’s presence is required at some injection mold changeovers to assist with logo tool installations, mold installations/removals, and robotic EOA tooling changes, at the request of the Injection Mold Supervisor. 
 
The CNC Operator will report to directly to the Injection Mold Supervisors for daily tasks and indirectly to the CNC Department Manager. 
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Operate CNC machine shop equipment as required in a safe and productive manner.
  2. Calculate fixture (work) offsets and tool length offsets during initial machine setup.
  3. Read and understand setup sheets and install fixtures per setup documentation.
  4. Work with cutting tool nomenclature as called out on setup instructions.
  5. Inspect and measure machined work.
  6. Adjust machine to maintain parts within print specifications.
  7. Perform some assembly and inspect for fit/function.
  8. Inspect parts for proper fit, and re-machine if necessary.
  9. “Build up” and install cutting tools.
  10. Identify when tools need to be changed and perform changes.
  11. Help install molds into Injection Molding machine.
  12. Monitor cutting fluids and lube oil levels to perform operator PM requirements.
  13. Work Overtime as required.
  14. Perform daily record keeping tasks as directed.
  15. Ability to plan and associate CNC programs together to maximize run time/efficiency.
 
 
 
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Participate in design & process reviews to prevent or resolve production issues.
  2. Supports QA by making adjustments, inspection, and re-machining parts if necessary.
  3. Must be able to work independently given the tools, setup instructions, and CNC programs.
  4. Perform simple CNC program edits (tool pocket identification, speed or feed adjustment).
  5. Performs other duties when required or requested.
 
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  1. Vocational or Technical school training in Machining or a minimum of five (5) years equivalent CNC work experience, preferably with CNC milling.
  2. Experience with variable gaging required (Micrometers, depth Mics, bore gages, etc.)
  3. Training in print reading or equivalent work experience required.
  4. Training in cutting tool use and terminology or sufficient work experience required.
  5. Familiarity with machining various materials, especially Aluminum.
  6. Proficient in basic computer skills required.
  7. Demonstrated written and communication skills required.
  8. Good interpersonal skills, ability to work within a team, ability to handle multiple tasks.
  9. Experience or training in G and M code CNC programming preferred.
 
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Work may involve standing, bending and lifting for extended periods of time.
  2. Ability to lift 40 pounds overhead.
